We met writer and illustrator Cherie Okonski at the L.A. Times Festival of Books, and she introduced us to her creation, Gumper the Rabbit. Here’s the description of her first book: “The Secret of Gumper the Rabbit is a story about a bunny who is born different from the other rabbits. Gumper’s best friend Oink, an easily frazzled guinea pig, helps him to use his differences to save the day at the pet store. Gumper learns many new lessons about being different while discovering a secret that is taught to all bunnies.” Here’s part of the secret: Proceeds from the sale of this and other Gumper the Rabbit books go to help children born with congenital heart disease. The official Gumper web site has more, including links to the YouTube channel. (There’s a fursuit!)
Country Bears movie...
Posted by Feren on Thu 3 May 2001 - 07:50This little tidbit was posted on alt.fan.furry by Joe Strike, and I thought it a little too surreal to be true. Christopher Walken is going to be in a movie with anthro or intelligent bears, produced by Disney? This is the same guy who was playing the vindictive, homicidal angel Gabriel in 'The Prophecy' and its sequel. It just doesn't mesh with reality, you know?
This is Joe's post to alt.fan.furry:
Mailbox Books calls for boycott of movie
Posted by Feren on Thu 3 May 2001 - 07:48While browsing Mailbox Books today I stumbled across an interesting link on the front page. RABCO Publishing (who now runs MB), in conjuction with Shanda Fantasy Arts and "other comic professionals" have posted a notice calling for a boycott of the new "Josie and the Pussycats" movie currently in theaters. Reasons cited are primarily related to alleged abuse by Archive Comics and Universal Studios of the comic's creator in regards to fair compensation and credit for his 50 years of work.

Furnation Status Update
Posted by shockwave on Tue 1 May 2001 - 11:20From Email on TAFF list:
Pass this info on to the newsgroups.
Furnation will be getting a new SDSL connection in approximately 3-4
weeks and will come back on line as soon as possible thereafter. Nexxus
moved to a new part of town and it's taken a while for the DSL people to
get up to speed in the area, but he's on their list to get a hookup by
the end of May. Once the first line is in and clear, he will decide if
he can afford a second or third one again

Article on the Future of Animation
Posted by Micah on Wed 25 Apr 2001 - 08:14Probably more appropriate to a topic we don't have (movie news?), here's an article from the LA Times about the future of animated features. It has an interesting flavor because it was written in November, so it's both timely enough to point out the future and dated enough to see if the predictions are coming true.
Recent Positive Article on Furry in Omaha, NE
Posted by camstone-fox on Tue 24 Apr 2001 - 23:58There has been plenty of bad reports on Furries and Fursuiters, but for once, a reporter from the Omaha World-Herald appears to have gotten it right with an interview with their local fur, SnapE Tiger. This positive article not only shows the positive side to furrydom, but doesn't seem to get bogged down in the tabloid sensationalism.
